Deja Voodoo eBook John Rasor

This is a fun time travel story, and more. When a man finds himself living his lifetime over with most of his memories intact, it’s like having a superpower. It made me wonder what I would do if I had a power like that. This story shows us how one man handles it. He’s a good man who wants to change things for the better – but he’s fallible and he knows it. He quickly learns there’s a price to pay when you mess with the universe, but he keeps trying. I enjoyed the story, and I liked the characters very much. An excellent read – highly recommended.

Deja Voodoo eBook John Rasor Reviews

An Amazing read.. Highly recommended
I loved this book. Once I got started I couldn't put it down. You will love it. Trust me.
Deja Voodoo is a time travel story with some aspects of other science fiction/time-travel stories I've read, but more than enough unique aspects that I never felt like it was a rehash, but unique in its own right. The premise, that the protagonist Ben is living his life over again, but sometimes remembers what happened the first time around. Or is it the last time and he'd been repeating this life over and over? I don't know about you, but I might be willing to try a do-over.

Of course if Ben changes one thing, that can change the path of his life and some of those around him. Yet, he soon discovers that eventually the world puts things back into balance, or so it seems, leaving him back at some point in much the same position as before. Ben also figures out that anonymous tips to law enforcement is an excellent way to stop some of the worst serial killers of his lifetime when they're barely getting started. Then he gets the idea of trying to prevent one of the biggest world-changing events of our time, September 11, 2001.

As I was reading the book there was something bothering me and I was having a heck of a hard time figuring out what it was. I considered the possibility that Ben as the narrator was painting himself in too good a light. Nope, that's not it. He was much harder on himself for mistakes. I finally came to the conclusion that the dialogue sometimes seemed a bit off. Once that finally sunk in, it stopped bothering me. I guess I decided Ben should be cut some slack for not remembering exact verbiage from two entire lifetimes and the thought process this sends your mind reeling down was an interesting exercise. (What if this was possible? Would you want it to happen to you?) It was too compelling to stop reading.

I really enjoyed this book. I am a big fan of time travel stories, and this one comes with a definite twist. I particularly like the fact that the author uses no gimmicks nobody falling to earth time and again - naked and looking for clothes; no time machine; no magic portal or black hole to pass through. This time travel is completely in the protagonist's mind. It isn't make-believe at all - but it happens in his mind, as he slowly realizes he has lived this life before. Once he realizes that he has been given a universal "do-over", Ben Collins starts experimenting with changing things for the better. Sometimes it works, and sometimes - when he reaches too high or too far - the universe gets involved, and things spin out of Ben's control. But he never stops trying - modulating his moves to keep the universe at bay, while still accomplishing good things. To add another twist, when Ben IS successful about changing things, he no longer knows what's going to happen next - until an event from his previous lifetime re-occurs, and he can get back on track. So Ben takes a huge chance every time he tries to change things, and then has to weather many surprises - some of them heart-breaking - along the way. Those who want their time travel constantly action-packed rather than thought-provoking might feel that Ben's occasional philosophizing interrupts the story, but I didn't. He has embarked upon an epic adventure, and to do that without thinking of the consequences - and ruminating upon the possibilities - would, to me, make the book simplistic. Ben MUST think about what he wants to accomplish before he attempts any changes, and as a reader, I am glad to be a party to his thoughts. Five stars!
When young Ben Collins discovers he has a unique ability to control time with his mind, he doesn't immediately think of changing the course of history. But as he goes through life, his talent for being able to go back and do over some events becomes more and more important as he witnesses some of the twentieth and twenty-first centuries' momentous proceedings. He's basically a good guy who wants to make things better, but the power isn't reliable, and the Universe has other ideas when it comes to changing history.
The book is a cerebral journey through the mind of an ordinary man with an extraordinary power. The real story is how he tries to envision the outcomes of his actions before attempting to make profound changes in the timeline. But he can't think of everything, and the Universe is still there with unexpected results.
I enjoyed the book very much. It's a good long read, perfect for those cold winter days or the coming summer vacation times. But be careful - you might want to just read a bit and come back to it, but instead find yourself reading through the night to see what happens.
