For months Christine Daae has been taking lessons from a mysterious tutor, who refuses to reveal his identity and refers to himself only as her "Angel".

But when her father announces that he's arranged her marriage to the infamous Vicomte de Chagny, she is whisked away without warning and brought to his mansion to await their wedding day. Lost and alone, Christine pines for her beloved Angel.

Consumed by grief, she spends most of her lonely days at the mansion trying to avoid the Vicomte's advisor; a formidable man who wears a mask and refuses to speak to her.

Will her Angel find her before it is too late?

Ah - I had high hopes for this one! The premise and the beginning showed promise. I give it 4 stars because, though crammed, and a bit all over the place, it was genuinely interesting and face paced. We didn't beat around the bush or waste time. I would probably give it a 3.5 if given the choice.

While a blessing, the pacing also in some ways a curse. For the idea the author had, I feel like she didn't take enough time to properly flesh it out. It was almost too fast paced. Time she could have taken to flesh the characters out and strengthen/further establish their relationship, she simply edited out to get to the next exciting part. Now if you're looking for a romantic Phantom quickie that'll entertain you, this is your book, but I was still left bereft, thinking it had the potential for so much more.

For instance, Raoul's villainy appears almost cartoonish, at some point. The writer didn't really give us time with him, other than when he was doing some awful dastardly thing... it just made him feel one-dimensional. Erik and Christine were almost as bad. Just... not as writing, just not enough time dedicated to fleshing them out.

I felt that some of the events that happened were so dark, particularly what Raoul does to Christine... yet it felt like neither she or the reader were given time to process and grieve... which somewhat cheapened the parts that were meant to be heavy.

But, like I said, it's not badly done, just rushed. The ending wraps up everything nicely, and how the Paris Opera House and its resident ghost are tied in was quite clever. Overall, it's an entertaining read, but doesn't encourage much emotional investment.

"Thoughts of Summertime" is a delightful, original story of "The Phantom of the Opera." Many of the characters from Leroux's work appear, but none are quite the same.

Here, Christine is forced by her father to accept an offer of marriage from Raoul, Vicomte de Chagny. Rather than a charming old friend from childhood, this Raoul is the epitome of evil. Christine's only hope of escape is that her mysterious "Angel" will rescue her in time.

Ms. Martell has crafted a very exciting and well-written book with great characters that should entertain Phantom fans as well as those who enjoy a good historical romance.
This book is absolutely something!
If you are looking for a new plot twist in our favorite story The Phantom of the Opera, this is it.

As fun as it is, however, it's not for anyone who are in favor of the original Erik that we all love and know. In this book Erik is depicted as almost a whole new and different person who grew up differently. He still has his insecurities and temperament, but it's not always in every chapter.

Christine is still the same, but she has the biggest character transformation in this.
Raoul is also a VERY different person! Jamie either REALLY didn't like Raoul or she REALLY wanted Erik to seem more civil than we know him to be. Just a warning!

The story itself is sort of the usual "get the damsel in distress and you have your way" kind of plot, but all in all it still surprised me here and there!

It's not for everyone, but I definitely suggest it to any POTO lover who wants something absolutely new!
This is a whole different version of POTO to read for entertainment!

Fair warning
There are some chapters that contain some sexual content. I didn't expect it, but it was also what made the story itself! (Well sort of, but it was fun!)
'Thoughts of Summertime' is one of the better Phantom fan fics out there. I've been reading Phantom fan fiction for a long time and by now, I feel like I've read every possible storyline under the sun. When I first discovered this book, I was definitely intrigued by the storyline and it didn't disappoint. Like other reviewers have said, there is enough of a twist on this retelling to leave you wondering what will happen next. As an avid reader, I love when I come across a book that is unpredictable.

I don't want to give away too many details but basically, 'Thoughts of Summertime' is about falling in love and trying to make a relationship work in the face of opposition. In this case, the opposition is Raoul. One thing that at first really bothered me about this book is how Raoul unfriendly it is. Seriously, Raoul is so ridiculously out of character; it's like the author invented a totally different person and slapped the name on him for good measure. However, the story wouldn't exist without his change in character because he's essentially the driving force of the plot. He makes for a particularly wicked villian, almost unrelenting in some parts. I thought the author did a very good job in shaping Christine's character. Erik plays more of the hero here, so I would consider him to be out of character but it didn't deter from my enjoyment of the story. Characters who aren't apart of the original story (book, play, or otherwise) were believable, particularly Raoul's manservant, Richard. The writing is fluid and easy to read without an abudance of typos. The pacing is excellent, never dwelling on one scene for too long. It has a very good balance of action, adventure, and cute, sentimental moments. It also has a very strong ending, which is what really knocked the ball out of the park for me. Overall, a very unique and concise retelling of The Phantom of the Opera, one I would read again in the future.
